Mo Willems (born February 11, 1968) is an American author, animator, vox actor, and children's book author. His piece of work includes creating the animated television serial Sheep in the Big City for Cartoon Network, working on Sesame Street and The Off-Beats, and creating the popular children's book serial Elephant and Piggie.
Early on life and education [edit]
Willems was born in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, Illinois[1] [2] and was raised in New Orleans, where he graduated from Trinity Episcopal School[3] and the Isidore Newman School.[4] [v] He graduated cum laude[6] from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Willems first became interested in cartoon art when he was simply a kid. When he was 3 or 4 he started to draw and create his own characters. Willems enjoyed writing stories most his characters to share with others. Notwithstanding, he was disappointed when adults would praise his work out of politeness. To set up this dilemma Willems started writing funny stories. He knew that even polite adults could non fake a laugh. And so when the adults laughed he knew his story was good and if the adults yet gave polite comments then he knew his story was bad.[seven]
Career [edit]
After graduating from Tisch, Willems spent a year traveling around the world drawing a cartoon every 24-hour interval, all of which accept been published in the volume You Tin Never Find a Rickshaw When it Monsoons.[viii]
Returning to New York, he started his career as a writer and animator for Sesame Street, where he earned half dozen Emmy Awards for writing during his tenure from 1993 to Jan 2002.[9] The segments he wrote and blithe for the show included a serial of short segments featuring the recurring character Susie Kabloozie, and her pet cat, Feff. During this menses he also performed stand-up comedy in NYC and recorded essays for BBC Radio along with making a promo for Drawing Network and animative the opening for a bear witness on Nickelodeon. Since 2003, Willems has authored numerous books for young children, many of which have garnered meaning critical acclamation. The New York Times Book Review referred to Willems as "the biggest new talent to emerge thus far in the 00's"[11] — and to his dove graphic symbol as "one of this decade'south contributions to the pantheon of great moving picture book characters."[12] He also creates the Elephant and Piggie books, an early reader series most a friendly elephant and grunter. In 2010, Willems introduced a new series of books featuring True cat the Cat, also aimed at early readers.[xiii]
Willems' books accept been translated into a number of languages, spawned animated shorts that accept twice been awarded the Carnegie Medal (Knuffle Bunny, 2007,[14] and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, 2010[xv]), and been developed into theatrical musical productions. Three of Willems' books take been awarded a Caldecott Accolade, for Don't Allow the Pigeon Drive the Motorcoach!, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, and Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity.[20] Knuffle Bunny Besides: A Case of Mistaken Identity also won the Indies Choice Volume Award for Children'southward Illustrated Book.[21]
Also in 2005, his volume Leonardo, the Terrible Monster was named a Time Magazine Best Children's Book; it was also awarded a Book Sense Book of the Twelvemonth Award Volume in 2006.[22]
Two animated versions of his books were awarded Carnegie Medals (Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Passenger vehicle!)[23]

Willems won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Children's Serial 6 times for his piece of work on Sesame Street between 1995 and 2001.[22]
In 2019, Willems was named the Best of Brooklyn, during the Brooklyn Book Festival.[28]
In 2020, Willems recorded an audio volume, The Dove HAS to Get to School!, for which he was nominated for the Audie Honor for Young Listeners.[29] The same book had Willems on the NY Times Bestseller listing for 11 weeks running.[thirty]

He married Cheryl Campsite in Brooklyn, New York, in 1997.[6] They reside in Northampton, Massachusetts.[31]
